Film
Over the past few years I've become interested in writing and directing
movies, and have been lucky enough to get to make a couple of well-received
shorts.
Made under the Irish Film Board's Short Shorts scheme, my first short Delphine
(2003) was accepted for a host of Irish and international festivals, and
has been broadcast on TV in 13 countries including France, Spain, Canada,
and Japan.
My second short, Why The Irish Dance That Way (2006), was made for the RTE/Arts
Council Dance On The Box series (choreography by brilliant sean-nós dancer
and teacher Ronan Regan). It was accepted by many prestigious film festivals,
including Montreal, Sydney, Berlin, and Clermont-Ferrand. In June 2007 it
was one of 9 shorts selected by New York's Museum of Modern Art for Shortfest:
Outstanding Shorts from The International Festivals, and in March 2008 it
won First Prize in the Chicago Irish Film Festival Jury Awards.
In 2009 I won First Prize in the Short Screenplay Awards at the Vail Film Festival (Colorado) and Second Prize in the Champion Screenwriting Awards (Los Angeles) for my third short screenplay “Shoe”. This is the story of a young man (Vince) who walks out onto a high bridge with the intention of throwing himself off – only to be accosted by a beggar (Probie) seeking to relieve him of his money and clothes before he jumps.
With the funding of the irish Film Board under their Signatures scheme I filmed “Shoe” in July 2010 - the main shoot took place over two days in Killorglin Co. Kerry, with further filming in various locations around Dublin subsequently. The main roles are played by Peter Coonan (Vince) and Pat Kinevane (Probie), the film was lit by Dave Grennan and produced by Seamus Byrne.
Following a brief theatrical run in Los Angeles, “Shoe” had its Irish premiere at the Cork Film Festival on November 13th.
On November 30th, it was announced that “Shoe” is on the shortlist of ten for the Oscar in the Live Action Short category of the 2011 Academy Awards.
“Shoe” has subsequently been screened at a host of Festivals around the world, winning the audience award at the Chicago Irish Film Festival, and “Best Irish Short” at the Corona Fastnet Short Film Festival.
AS we are still in festival-entering mode, “Shoe” is not not yet available to view online. But you can find out more about “Shoe” at www.shoethefilm.com and keep up to date with my film activities via mynick kelly film facebook page.
In 2009 I received a Writer’s Loan from the Irish Film Board to write a first draft of my first feature film script “Incognita”, which I completed early in 2010. I’m currently developing a new feature length script with the working title of “Breakpoint”, also with the support of the IFB, plus several other film and TV projects.
